Comfort Keepers challenged the White Rock/South Surrey community to help collect 1000 tins of tuna to benefit the Surrey Food Bank who has a hamper delivery program specifically for seniors/the elderly.  The purpose of this challenge is to raise awareness about senior hunger and senior malnutrition, which are far more prevalent than people realize. The folks of that cohort are intensely private and often not forthcoming with talking about problems they are having.

Hunger/malnutrition can be caused by; lack of funds (and rising food costs); mobility issues (either physical or transportation) to get to a grocery store or food bank; cognitive issues to select, prepare and store food (resulting in consumption of expired foods and wrong foods); and loss of interest in food due to decrease in tastebud acuity or – pay attention to this one families – LONLINESS and not wanting to eat alone!

“WATCH” for signs of hunger and malnutrition.

Camp Moomba Yogathon

The Camp Moomba Yogathon raises funds for Canadian children impacted by HIV/AIDS. Camp Moomba is in partnership with the WCPAS (Western Canadian Pediatric AIDS Society) and is a registered charity.

Established in 1997, Camp Moomba is a specialized summer camp program for children impacted by HIV/AIDS. Recognizing that isolation and discrimination are among the greatest challenges facing these children, Camp Moomba strives to give them a brief respite from their illness in a camp community based on equality, friendship, and support. For children whose lives are filled with instability and suffering from grief, loss, and illness, it is a place where the stigma of HIV/AIDS does not exist. 112 children, ranging from ages 6-17, attended Camp Moomba last year. Each year the wait list grows. Currently, Camp Moomba is the only camp in Canada for kids impacted by HIV.

Most children living with HIV/AIDS not only have to cope with the suffering and losses associated with the disease but also difficult socio-economic factors that may have helped bring the disease into their lives. Camp Moomba’s greatest impact comes from providing the children with respite from the difficulties in their lives, giving them the chance just to be kids

2010 marked FloMotion Studio - Yoga Chix Team 5th year in a row participating in Camp Moomba Yogathon.

In 2008 the Yoga Chix raise just under $7,000 in support of Camp Moomba Yogathon and rank first place in the Yogathon Team Fundraising efforts. It takes approximately $2500 to send one child to camp.

In 2009, Catherine the team leader of the Yoga Chix, was honored to co-teach the Yogathon with some of Vancouver's most amazing Yoga Instructors. The Yogathon is Canada's largest yoga class with almost 2500 participants each year.

Check out the Camp Moomba Yogathon website for all the details.
